Julie is two years old. Last year her
parents noticed she could only hear loud
noises. Now Julie is in a special program
for babies with all kinds of handicaps…and
her parents are learning how to help her at
home.
What it is
The Macomb Infant Preschool Program
(MIPP)
is designed to bring the family and school
together to develop basic learning skills in
very young children with special needs.
These children may have mental, physical,
emotional, hearing, vision or speech and
language impairments. The children in the
program range in age from birth to 3 years.
Specialists work with children to help them
develop such skills as walking, using a
hearing aid or playing appropriately with
toys. Therapists also demonstrate these
techniques to the children’s parents so
they can follow up with skill developing
sessions at home.
Student Eligibility
Children from birth to 3 years old with
mental, physical, health, hearing, visual,
speech, language, emotional impairments are
eligible for MIPP services. Macomb County
doctors and nurses refer some children. Most
of the children are identified through
evaluation at the MISD Assessment Center.
Services Available
MIPP is a name for a group of services
that are available to Macomb County infants,
preschoolers and their families. Services
from other community agencies are
coordinated for the child and family when
necessary.
Educational specialists on the MIPP
staff provide varied services including
physical therapy, occupational therapy,
speech and language therapy, social work,
cognitive development, and training for
children with hearing and vision
impairments.
Group parent education meetings are also
held regularly.
Program Location
MIPP services are provided at MISD's
main building (Educational Services Center),
and the Auxiliary Pre-School Services Center, both in Clinton
Township. Services are also available at
Rockwell School in Warren, and at the
Engineering Technology Center in Romeo. In addition,
services to infants and toddlers (under 18
months) and their families are provided in
the child’s home.
