Make a Difference Award
2006

Three educators recently won the Special Education Make a Difference Award from the Macomb County’s Parent Advisory Committee (PAC). These awards are especially meaningful because students and their parents nominated their favorite educators for the honor.

This year’s winners are:
Kim Ayrault
, a teacher of young children with special needs at
Forest Park Elementary School in the East Detroit Public Schools
Sharon Selewonik, a teacher of young children with special needs at
Thomas Edison Elementary School in the Fraser Public Schools
Shirley McMellen, a Physical Therapist working with very young children and their families in the Macomb Infant Preschool Program (MIPP) of the Macomb Intermediate School District

Congratulations to each of you from the
Macomb County Parent Advisory Committee

     Kim Ayrault

Kim Ayrault  strives to do her best and will settle for nothing less.  Her work ethic began when she played basketball for Grosse Pointe North  High School, setting many records and earning a full scholarship to Wayne State University.  There she earned her teaching degree, followed by a master’s degree in early childhood education from Saginaw Valley State University.  Kim has been teaching second grade at Forest Park for the past 10 years.  Her strong ability to employ various teaching strategies to accommodate students’ needs makes her a positive role model.  One parent wrote that Kim’s “love of teaching is apparent and has transferred onto her students as a love for learning.”  Kim is an outstanding teacher and colleague.

     Sharon Selewonik

Sharon Selewonik has a master’s degree in special education for the learning disabled and has taught in Fraser Public Schools for 28 years.  She has been called a “guardian angel” by her students, whom she protects from failure by creating an environment where success is a key factor.  Sharon has a remarkable ability to teach strategies and methods that help her students become successful learners.  Her expertise and enthusiasm for children, learning and teaching are laudable.  She is patient and encouraging, working with students whose problems would be frustrating to most.  Sharon believes parents play a major role in the education process and her classroom is an inviting and stimulating learning environment.
