Retellings for Comprehension

Materials Needed:

 

 

 

Materials provided ay ISD or site:

·        MLPP Handouts developed by the MISD

·        Sign in sheets, name tags and evaluations

·        A-V equipment, usually an overhead and a VCR (if you need anything else, call the curriculum office of the hosting district to make arrangements.

Materials to be brought by the presenter:

·        Your prepared overheads

·        Practice ORR Mini Lessons to analyze

·        Sulzby Video

·        Sulzby Administration Booklet/Beals

·        Overheads of sample written retellings to score as a whole group, K-2 Narrative, 3-5 Narrative, 3-5 Informational and 2 additional to score in small groups.

Review of

Module 4:

  (25 minutes)

 

ü         Utilize packet of prepared mini lessons regarding oral reading records.  Lesson Two reviews Substitutions and utilizing prompts for Meaning and Structure.  Check your case study child’s ORR for examples of substitutions.

ü         Share writing sample(s) from case study child in mixed grade level groups (sit in groups of 4, pass the papers around clockwise with each person giving a score on each of the 4 papers -compare scores at the end – use both holistic and analytic scoring rubrics)

ü         Pair up with 1 of the 4 people in your group and discuss case study child’s ORR along with the writing piece.  What commonalities do you notice? (Trainer may want to model their own samples)

Sulzby’s Comprehension

    (75 minutes)

ü         Set purpose for assessment and introduce classification system and score sheet (attachment 5_1a, 5_1b, 5_c)

ü         Watch Jeff Beal’s video demonstrating 11 different rubric levels and have participants do the practice scoring of three students at the end of the video.  Discuss those scores.

ü         Discuss Sulzby’s 18 appropriate books (5-2) and answer questions participants still have about the purpose of repeated readings.

ü         Briefly introduce Profundity Scale for older students.  How Produndity relate and work toward theme. (This will be presented more in-depth in Module 6.)

 

Break

   (10 minutes)

 


 

Retelling

   (60 minutes)

ü      Share Puffer Fish story and writing sample (in their handout) (Attachment 5-3).  Have students participate in doing a Puffer Fish retelling following the directions found in the MLPP.

ü      Introduce rubrics and analyze written pieces (Puffer Fish) together (Attachment 5-4).  Do 3 together  (K-2 Narrative, 3-5 Narrative and 3-5 Informational) and score 2 more in small groups and discuss. This provides independent practice using the scoring rubrics.

ü      Introduce types of retellings and their benefits as instructional activities (Attachment 5-5). Point out several sheets of retelling activities.

ü      Discuss the 4 Developmental Levels of Retelling beginning with Pretelling, Guided Retelling, Story Map Retelling and Written Retelling.  Discuss appropriateness of your type of retelling  (Oral, Pictorial or Written) used based upon your child’s background experience with retellings.  Attachment 5-6.

ü      Share instructional strategies for each off the developmental stages. (Attachment 5-7 à 5-13)

Assignment

     10 minutes

ü   Complete Evaluation Sheet and turn in.

ü      Do an appropriate retelling with your case study child and bring evidence for discussion to Module 6 along with writing sample.

ü      Continue to answer questions 3 & 4 on your case study questionnaire.
